Osborne Clarke has advised Palladio Partners on a partnership with Voltfang aimed at jointly developing battery storage systems in Germany. The investment volume amounts to approximately EUR 250 million by 2029.

Palladio Partners, an investor specialised in private markets, and Voltfang, a specialist in the development of battery storage solutions, have entered into a partnership to accelerate the energy transition by providing flexibility from utility-scale battery storage projects. The partnership covers long‑term cooperation in the development, delivery and commercialisation of large‑scale battery storage. The first concrete projects from the cooperation are expected to reach construction readiness later this year. The capital comes from a fund managed by Palladio Partners for institutional investors that focuses on the transformation of infrastructure in Germany.

Over the next four years, Voltfang and financial investor Palladio Partners plan to build battery storage systems in Germany worth EUR 250 million. Within the cooperation, Voltfang will handle project development as well as construction and installation of the large‑scale storage systems. Palladio will be responsible for financing and commercialisation of the battery storage. The capital comes from a fund managed by Palladio for institutional investors such as insurers or pension funds.

“The growing demand for electricity storage coupled with lower technology costs makes investment in the expansion of battery storage very attractive at present,” said Oliver Sauer, Partner at Palladio Partners. “Voltfang’s sustainable business model fits very well with our transformation fund and the interests of our investors. The expertise and experience of our advisers was very helpful to us in assessing and executing this investment in the still dynamically developing battery storage market.”

“We would like to thank Palladio Partners for their trust and Voltfang for the successful collaboration. This deal is excellent evidence that flexibility from battery storage is a supporting pillar of a functioning energy transition. Battery storage as an infrastructure asset is an attractive investment which, in view of the dynamic legal, technical and economic parameters, requires creative solutions and collaboration among all stakeholders on an equal footing,” said Dr Daniel Breuer, Partner and Sector Head Energy & Energy Transition at Osborne Clarke.

The team advising Palladio Partners on the transaction, led by Dr Daniel Breuer, Dr David Langenbach and Veronika Thalhammer (all Energy), comprised Anna von Bremen, Marleen Rheker and Dr Karla Klasen, Bineta Diambang (Real Estate) as well as Dr Thies Goldner, Alexandra Nautsch and Friedrich Polzin (Corporate).
