No time to waste: Preparing for onshore renewables decommissioning
Published on 29 October 2026
Osborne Clarke has collaborated with Regen, along with co sponsors Nadara and EMR, on a new paper exploring how the UK can turn renewable energy decommissioning into an opportunity. Around 1,350 UK onshore wind turbines could reach the end of their operational lives by 2035, rising to nearly 4,000 by 2040, according to Regen’s analysis. With solar PV and battery storage set to follow, the sector needs to prepare for the next phase of the clean energy transition.
Drawing on this collaboration, No time to waste: Ensuring successful decommissioning of onshore renewables explores the challenges ahead and the opportunities to recover valuable materials, build domestic recycling and refurbishment industries, and create jobs and economic value.
