Dr Lina Boecker is a highly experienced information technology (IT) lawyer and one of the few recognised experts in the field of open-source software (OSS) compliance. She advises companies on all key aspects of open source usage, with a particular focus on code curation, licence analysis and software architecture, helping clients to design and implement robust and practical open source compliance structures.

A further core area of Lina’s practice is advising on artificial intelligence. She supports clients in developing and rolling out AI compliance frameworks, navigating the evolving regulatory landscape for AI systems and addressing the contract law issues that arise across the lifecycle of AI projects – from procurement and implementation through to product integration and scaling in complex environments.

Lina works particularly at the interface between open source and AI. She develops licensing and compliance strategies for AI systems and models that build on open source components or open models, aligning legal risk management with technical design decisions. In addition, she advises on contract drafting – including development, licence and cooperation agreements – and on technology-driven transactions where IP, data, open source and AI play a central role.

A defining feature of Lina’s work is her deep technical understanding. She collaborates closely with development, architecture and product teams to understand the underlying technologies and constraints, and to craft solutions that are both legally sound and workable in practice.

Lina’s sector focus is on Mobility (in particular Automotive) and Tech, Media & Comms (TMC), where she has a strong track record. Her experience ranges from embedded software in vehicles and connected services and platforms through to data- and AI-driven business models in the media and content industries.

Lina was admitted to the bar in 2011. Before joining Osborne Clarke, she spent nine years – more than five of them as a partner – at a Berlin-based boutique law firm specialising in IT law. She joined Osborne Clarke as a partner in 2022.

Helping you succeed in tomorrow's world

Open source and AI are reshaping how products are built, deployed and scaled – especially in automotive and media. I help clients turn this technical reality into something legally manageable: from curating code and analysing licences to designing architectures that stand up to open source compliance scrutiny. At the same time, I work with businesses to build AI compliance frameworks and licensing strategies that keep pace with fast-moving regulation without slowing down innovation.

Because many of these questions sit exactly at the intersection of technology and law, I work closely with engineering, architecture and product teams and speak their language. My goal is to translate complex technical setups into clear legal risk pictures – and then into contracts, processes and governance that are robust in theory and workable in practice.
