Overview of environmental obligations in real estate transactions in Flanders

Published on 20th Dec 2022

Since 23 November 2022, an asbestos certificate is required when selling homes or buildings built before 2001. By 2032, every building owner of a building built before 2001 must have an asbestos certificate.

This asbestos certificate is part of the Flemish asbestos removal policy. The Flemish Government wants to identify as soon as possible all asbestos present in Flemish buildings and houses, and remove it where necessary. In doing so, it wants to make Flanders asbestos-safe by 2040 at the latest.

The introduction of the asbestos certificate is a further example of how the Flemish lawmaker is using real estate transactions to pursue environmental and climate policies. In the link below we give an overview of the environmental obligations in real estate transactions in Flanders.
