He is the UK head of the Energy and Energy Transition sector, where he leads the cross-service line UK team, which advises clients on the development, operation, construction, financing, acquisition and disposal of energy generation and storage projects in the renewables and energy transition space. He leads a senior-led, relationship-driven practice where he delivers commercially focused advice at pace to his clients.
A private equity and M&A lawyer by training, Matt has now worked in the energy sector for more than twenty years. He has advised cleantech start-ups and venture/private equity investors, energy infrastructure investors, pension funds, corporates and utilities on a range of investments and transactions.
He has been with Osborne Clarke for decades and he has developed long-lasting relationships with his clients and developed a deep understanding of their businesses, sectors and topics. His client work includes raising institutional and project finance, operational M&A, the acquisition and disposal of generation, energy from waste and storage assets, joint ventures and development agreements.
He also advises utility clients on transactional and strategic matters relating to the management of their asset portfolios. Recent work has included advising Foresight Group, RWE Generation PLC, Octopus Energy, Ameresco Inc and Amey plc.
I really enjoy working in an area that plays a transformative role in shaping our future environment and community. The decarbonisation of our sources of energy has gone from niche, to mainstream, to priority in the course of my career and provided lots of opportunities for our clients. I have always enjoyed working with clients and colleagues in navigating and maximising those opportunities, and avoiding the pitfalls!
Matt is knowledgeable, commercially astute, user-friendly, [provides] focused and practical advice, affable, [and is] calm and (importantly), good company.
