Osborne Clarke advises green flexibility on cooperation with Hansa Battery – project pipeline expanded by 500 MW

Osborne Clarke has advised green flexibility on a cooperation with Hamburg-based project developer Hansa Battery regarding the development of around 500 megawatts of large-scale battery storage projects.
As an expert in the energy transition, green flexibility combines in-depth expertise with state-of-the-art battery storage technology to shape the energy infrastructure of the future in a reliable, flexible and sustainable way. The company supports the energy transition with innovative solutions for large-scale battery storage systems that enable the sustainable and socially responsible integration of renewable energies. As an end-to-end partner for battery storage systems, green flexibility plans, builds and operates battery storage at strategically important points of the electricity grid across Germany. In doing so, green flexibility handles all project phases: from identifying suitable sites, through implementation and operation, to the commercialisation of the storage systems.
As part of a cooperation with Hamburg-based project developer Hansa Battery, green flexibility has now entered into a framework agreement covering projects with a planned connection capacity totalling around 500 MW. The projects are located at several sites in Germany. The agreement governs development by Hansa Battery up to ready-to-build status and the subsequent acquisition by green flexibility. At the same time, green flexibility is preparing implementation, financing and operation.
The partnership brings together development expertise and operational experience to move suitable projects swiftly from ready-to-build into construction and operation. Financial and strategic support is provided, among other things, through BKZ advance payments as part of the pre-financing of the grid connection.
“The cooperation between green flexibility and Hansa Battery shows how development, construction and financing capabilities can be smartly integrated at an early stage to move large-scale storage projects more quickly from planning into operation through the interplay of developer and investor,” says Dr Daniel Breuer, Sector Head Energy & Energy Transition at Osborne Clarke. “We designed the structure and the framework agreement so that financing certainty, grid connection and deliverability are aligned.”
“Working with Osborne Clarke shows how valuable experienced partners are who not only provide legal advice, but also understand the energy industry in all its complexity. Together we are laying the foundation to implement our growth strategy reliably with strong partners such as Hansa Battery,” adds Christoph Lienert, Co‑Founder and COO of green flexibility.
The Osborne Clarke team that advised green flexibility on the structuring and contractual design of the cooperation, led by Dr Daniel Breuer and Veronika Thalhammer (Energy law/Project agreements) and Dr Benjamin Monheim (Corporate), comprised Olexiy Oleshchuk, Andreas Baumann (Finance), Dr Jana Bertus (Corporate), Anna von Bremen and Rahel Brockmann (Energy law/Grid connection), Bineta Diambang, Theresa Viegener (Real estate) and Natalie Kopplow (Permits).
