International law firm Osborne Clarke has advised Basecamp Research Ltd ("Basecamp"), a company that designs protein products based on the largest knowledge graph of natural biodiversity in existence, on a $20 million Series A funding round led by climate investor, Systemiq Ventures.

The Osborne Clarke team was led by Corporate Partner Matthew Edwards and Associate Kamila Bochenek.

Valo, Blue Horizon, True Ventures, and Hummingbird Ventures also participated in the round, bringing Basecamp’s total funding to date to $30 million. The funding will be used to expand the company's existing team, fully validate internal products, and continue building a product portfolio in industries such as pharmaceuticals, nutrition, agriculture, and consumer goods.

The company was founded in 2019 with a mission to build the world's largest database of natural DNA sequences that is entirely ethically sourced, reconnecting biotechnology with biodiversity. Basecamp designs protein products that provide R&D teams access to more starting points, allows for the discovery of previously inaccessible proteins, and tests candidates most likely to succeed. Their knowledge graph, BaseGraph™, is built to comprehend and recreate the collective intelligence of nature, uncovering previously unseen relationships between enzyme and protein classes.

Basecamp has collected samples from over 40 expeditions spanning the globe, all of which are collected in compliance with the Nagoya Protocol, with the purpose of sustaining local ecosystems. Through Basecamp’s unique benefit-sharing model, local partners receive a share of customer royalties.

This deal further showcases Osborne Clarke's proven strength in advising on transactions in the life sciences and healthcare sector. The firm's Corporate team is considered a go-to practice for many companies in this sector and beyond, working with global businesses to fast-growth start-ups and market challengers. The team advises at every stage of company development across all corporate issues, from equity and debt fundraisings to M&A, IPOs and JVs.
