Dr Martin Soppe advises and represents companies primarily in copyright law, advertising law and media law, both in and out of court.

Being admitted to the bar since July 2000, Martin focuses on all aspects of copyright law, including licenses, copyright contract law and litigating copyright claims. 

He has extensive experience in advertisement law, including the admissibility of advertising claims and campaigns, the law of contracts of media planning and advertising agencies and numerous other questions in the advertising sector. 

Moreover, Martin has been dealing extensively also with media law related questions for many years, including entertainment law, licenses, libel and privacy, media regulatory and compliance matters in the media industry.

Martin has an in-house background in a leading European publishing company, where he was Associate General Counsel for the last nine years, before joining Osborne Clarke as a partner in January 2015. During his inhouse career Martin was dealing with all legal matters of an international media company in a quickly transforming environment. In his current role, Martin advises numerous companies of all sizes on strategic and operational legal issues and, if necessary, represents them in disputes both in and out of court.

Martin studied law in Hannover and Geneva and completed his clerkship in Hamburg and New York. He worked as a research assistant at the Max-Planck Institute for Foreign and International Private Law in Hamburg and participated in Executive Education programmes at the INSEAD and at Harvard Business School.

Martin served as Vice President of the Hamburg Bar and chaired the Hamburg Bar’s Committee for the Certification of Copyright and Media Law Lawyers for twelve years. He is a board member of the Association of Publishing House Counsels and a former chairman of the Legal Committee of the Association of German Magazine Publishers. Moreover, Martin publishes regularly on sector-specific issues and is recommended for Media law and IP law in the directories of Best Lawyers, JUVE and German Handelsblatt.
