Umberto worked for leading UK and US law firms, before joining Osborne Clarke and in over 25 years’ experience, he has acquired extensive and specific expertise in the corporate-finance sector, while regularly sitting on the board of Italian and European institutions as an expert on alternative finance.
He is the Head of the Italian Financial Services team and Head of Osborne Clarke International’s Alternative Finance group. His experience spans extraordinary finance transactions - including M&A, private equity and equity/debt capital market - and financial regulation, in particular as far as regards alternative forms of finance and Fintech.
Umberto advises Italian and international clients and multinationals, financial institutions, and investment funds on issues of financial regulation and compliance as well as on their extraordinary transactions. He has also developed specific expertise in payments systems and alternative finance in the ambit of which he advises equity and lending crowdfunding platforms, payment institutions, electronic money issuers and Fintech players.
Named as top tier finance lawyer by Legal 500 in 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021 for his particular expertise in financial regulation in relation to alternative forms of finance, payments and Fintech. Since 2014, he has represented Italy in the European Crowdfunding Stakeholders Forum, a group of experts selected by the European Commission to provide legal advice to the Directorate General “Internal Market”. He is a member of the Technical Committee for Credit & Finance of Assolombarda, as Head of the Alternative Finance and Capital Market Union sectors, and a member of the Technical Committee of Associazione dei Prestatori dei Servizi di Pagamento – the Italian Payment service providers association - with the task of following the development of the financial service regulations.
He regularly speaks at leading industry conferences and recently provided training to the Italian Finance Police School on matters related to PSD2, Anti Money Laundering and Fintech regulations. Umberto is the author of over 50 publications on alternative financing and two books:
