Training contracts & development
Start the way ...

Building a career in law won't happen overnight, but with the right amount of perseverance, desire, and as much experience as you can lay your hands on, you can expect to make steady, even surprising progress. Especially when you consider the levels of support you will receive from those around you.

With a collaborative and friendly environment, access to high quality work and a culture dedicated to helping you fulfil your potential as a lawyer, there's no reason why you shouldn't flourish here.

Seat programme

Expect diversity and challenge during your two year training contract. You'll complete four six month seats which will comprise of one contentious seat, one corporate seat, and the majority of our trainees will also undertake either a property or a tax seat.

All our lawyers work in teams and as a valued team member you'll have individual and intensive coaching by highly experienced lawyers, as well as access to a real caseload. This will enable you to qualify with experience and confidence in dealing with clients - essential at the start of your career.

Secondments

It's not just about becoming a great lawyer. You also have to be commercially minded to progress within the firm and provide clients with business and commercially-focused advice.

You may have the opportunity to spend one of your seats on secondment with one of our clients. This is a great way for trainees to learn more about the challenges clients face, develop their commercial understanding and help to strengthen business relationships for the firm.

Development and support

Trainee development is essential for the growth of the firm and in each seat you will be assigned a training supervisor, who is responsible for your day-to-day supervision. The training supervisor will provide support through coaching, monitoring and the delegation of work. In addition to regular informal feedback from your supervisor, you will benefit from formal progress reviews held every three months with your training supervisor to track your development. You will also benefit from regular support offered by our trainee development team.

New trainees are assigned a trainee 'buddy' to help them through the first few months of their training contracts and regular trainee forums are held throughout the year.  Our focus is on your development, so you will not be subject to billing targets during your training contract. We're also careful to recruit a small, select number of people to the scheme each year, allowing us to concentrate all our support and resources on helping you to qualify.

Training

In addition to the hands-on experience you'll gain, formal training is central to your development. During your time as a trainee you will benefit from a full induction programme to help you find your way around, get to know your colleagues and learn how to use our technology. During each of the four seats trainees also benefit from practice specific courses.

Throughout your training contract you will complete the Professional Skills Course (PSC) as required by the Solicitors Regulation Authority. This is spread over two years, and comprises of three core modules and four electives, giving you the opportunity to put what you learn into practice. The core modules are: client care, financial and business skills, advocacy and communication skills. For your electives, our training team will work closely with you to enrol you on courses that fit in with your long term career goals.

And beyond

Your development won't stop on qualification. All our employees are encouraged to develop and achieve their full potential which is why we have a number of development programmes in place.

Upon qualification you will attend a newly qualified solicitor day which will equip you for the start of your life as a qualified solicitor.

From here, we also provide training days for employees who are coming up to associateship and specific days for employees coming up to partnership.

Sponsorship

We offer full sponsorship for both the GDL and the LPC providing you are not more than half way through your course when you accept our offer of a training contract.

We also offer a maintenance grant of £6,500 per course.
